Earning Back-to-School Badges

Earning Back-to-School Badges

Rapid changes are hard for everyone, especially youngsters, so making the transition from casual summer nights to a more regimented back-to-school timetable can be challenging. Make it easier by easing into it slowly. Try some of these tips, and make it fun by giving out 'badges' for completion!

Reading Badge

Start going to bed earlier each night in the weeks before school. Have little ones read in bed before sleeping. Not only will this make them feel like they are staying up later, it'll prepare them for quiet time and classroom reading.

Activity Badge

Exercise is always important, more so when bed times get earlier and mean less time playing outside. Ensure your youngsters are burning off enough steam by encouraging active playtime during the day.

Tech Badge

Rules tend to be more lax over the summer so iPad and TV time have likely increased. Set timers that signal it's time for getting PJ's on and brushing teeth. Studies suggest that blue light in the evening disrupts the brain's natural sleep-wake cycles , which are crucial for optimal function of the body. Limit tech time to ensure your kids get the best night's sleep.

Snack Badge

Make a week's worth of after school snacks to avoid hearing the dreaded words, "When's dinner ready? I'm hungry." Make it a family event by getting kids to help make their favorite snacks.

Healthy Badge

Getting kids to eat healthy can be a challenge, especially if you have picky eaters. Get them involved in cooking to encourage healthy eating habits. And since we're pretty sure they don't always eat the apple in their lunch, giving them a multivitamin, such as liquid Salus® Kinderlove (US/CA), helps ensure they are getting all the nutrients their growing bodies need.
