Quality control issues - terrible smell and taste

Loved the idea of a vegetarian (algae-based) DHA, but there seems to be serious quality control issue with this product. I’ve been purchasing this for about 8 months, and I’ve started to notice that some batches have an awful smell and taste, while other batches have nearly no taste or odour. A bottle I recently brewed purchased was so horrible I threw it out, worried that it was perhaps rancid (though it’s best before date is Nov 2026). Would expect more consistent quality control from Flora.

Hello Abra,

Thank you for sharing this experience, I regret it has not been more enjoyable.
It is a shame that we did not get a chance to speak with you prior to reassure you that our product would not have been rancid and it is unfortunate that we did not connect prior to the product being thrown away.

There is a Product Info line on the bottle that we encourage you to call anytime, it is great to tell us what lot number and product you have questions about.

Flora has never released any rancid product and take extreme pride in the freshness of our oils especially.

I will email you the rest of the information explaining as well as a coupon.

Thanks
Flora Health

Is this safe to take during pregnancy in the first trimester, even with the added rosemary extract?

FloraHealth Canada

Hi Maddie,

Congratulations on your pregnancy and thank you for the great question.

Yes, just as it is safe to consume some rosemary in your diet without concern, it is safe to use our product where the amount of rosemary is minimal.

Our product is safe and beneficial for use in pregnancy. It was closely reviewed by Health Canada in order to receive the NPN Health Claims it has and the dosages suggested.

The NPN allowable health claims include one directed at infants (When used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, DHA supports healthy neural and vision development) and one directed at children (Clinically proven to improve reading ability and some ADHD-type behavioral symptoms (restless-impulsive, oppositional, hyperactivity and mood swing).
And of course there is a dose given By Health Canada specifically for pregnancy, something that is fairly rare.

(That dose is to take a capsule 1-2x daily: Pregnant and breastfeeding women: Take 1 capsule 1-2 times daily with food.)

According to the American Pregnancy Association, based on a study in rodents in the 1990s, rosemary is considered Possibly Unsafe when used orally in medicinal amounts.

The rosemary extract used in this product is not a medicinal amount, which is why it does not appear in the list of "medicinal ingredients". The amount used is a miniscule amount that is added during the process of extracting the DHA from the algae, just to ensure freshness during that process without using an artificial preservative.

The amount is much less than the amount used in a supplement where rosemary is intended to exert a medicinal effect, and is much less than the quantity given to the poor pregnant rats, who of course are much smaller than people.

I hope that helps :)

All the best,
Flora Health
