Five Ways to Gently Detoxify Your Body Every Day

It’s hard to go a day without hearing about the dangers of toxins in our air, chemicals in our cosmetics, and pesticides in our food. It’s downright scary.
And it’s true, we are dealing with a higher daily chemical assault than we did a generation ago. It makes the idea of a big detox cleanse seem pretty much necessary.
But that might not be the case for most of us. Our bodies are used to dealing with toxins. Our liver orchestrates a whole-body detox every day, moving toxins out of our body through our digestion, kidneys, lungs, and skin. We don’t have to do anything for this to happen, it’s a part our body’s normal maintenance cycle. We can even help with this process! And our bodies would really appreciate a little bit of help. It doesn’t take a lot of work or a strict and difficult cleanse. It just takes a few daily and weekly habits. In return, you’ll probably have more energy, clearer skin, and a happier digestive system. Our bodies are great at saying thank-you.

Five ways to gently detox daily

  1. Lemon and water first thing in the morning

This very simple detox habit works surprisingly well. The sour taste of the lemon triggers your gallbladder to release any fat-soluble toxins your liver has stored there overnight. The water helps your digestive system work smoothly and move those toxins right out. Just add ¼ - ½ of a fresh lemon, juiced, to room temperature water. Drink this when you first wake up in the morning and wait 15 mins before eating or drinking anything else.
  1. Enjoy liver-friendly veggies

All veggies are chock-full of detox-friendly fiber. There are three families of veggies that are extra supportive of your natural detox cycle: Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage) – this family contains indole-3-carbinol, which is an important liver detox nutrient and helps move excess hormones out of your body. Enjoy 3–4 servings per week. Allium family (garlic, onions) – this flavorful group of veggies contain lots of sulfur, which supports the liver and even helps to rebuild the cartilage in our joints. Enjoy 4–5 servings per week. Dark leafy greens (kale, chard, collard greens) – this group is full of chlorophyll which is a blood cleanser and can help remove heavy metals from the body. Enjoy 3–4 servings per week.
  1. Skin brushing

This is a fast and easy tool to help move your lymph. Your lymph is a huge system of fluid that acts as the garbage collector for toxins and cellular debris, and skin brushing is a great way to keep your lymph happy! Use a natural bristle brush and brush your arms and legs. Start at your wrist or ankle and move towards your heart. Brush your right side and then move to your left. Jump in a hot shower to end your session.
  1. Exercise

This is another great way to move your lymph and a good sweat helps move toxins out through your skin. Aim for 150 mins per week—and don’t forget to sweat!
  1. Flor-Essence

This traditional tea blend of 8 herbs gently supports our natural detoxification cycle, without the use of harsh laxatives. Sometimes our body needs a bit of extra help, and Flor-Essence (US/CA) supports our whole-body detox. Mix 4 tablespoons into warm water, and enjoy 1 – 3 times per day. By incorporating these foods and habits into your day, you’re well on your way to a body that can stay healthy and happy in our modern world!
